Fish Hatchery Ponds Program
There is a program between the DEC, the Lake Ontario Fisheries Coalition and the Village of Cape Vincent to raise Walleye in 13 of the 24 fish ponds in the Village of Cape Vincent that have been idle for over 30 years. 6 ponds
were opened in 2005 and one additional in 2006 and one additional
each year to a total of 13 ponds. Each pond has the potential of raising 30,000 fingerlings each spring to be released.
A second program with the DEC is to remove the lower 5 ponds for safety reasons and eventually turning the property over to the Village of Cape Vincent. The removal of the ponds is scheduled to be completed by the summer of 2005.
New Welcome Center
A Welcome Center is planned for the East End Park. The projected cost is $288,000. 80% of this cost will be covered by the Federal Grant and 20% will be the responsibility of the Village of Cape Vincent. The program is in the design and review stage and if it is decided to go ahead with the project it is expected to be completed in
2006.
Updating the Village of Cape Vincent Zoning Laws
The zoning laws of the Village of Cape Vincent are being updated. A team of seven people made up of the Jefferson County Department of Planning Community Development Coordinator, one Village Trustee, the Village Planning Board Chairperson, the Village Zoning Board of Appeals Chairperson and three Village of Cape Vincent Citizens.
Upgrading the Village Storm Drain Infrastructure
A program has been started to repair and upgrade the storm drains in the Village of Cape Vincent. There are
11 main drains leading to the river that need repair and upgrading. The program is to start at the river of each main drain and work south
through the Village cleaning, repairing and in some cases enlarging the system. This is a long term program that will take several years. Though we have started working, it will be necessary to apply for grants to help support the program.
Repairing Village Sidewalks
A program has been set up to repair the village sidewalks. For the program the Village is putting in the budget each year $7,000 for materials and using village labor to replace approximately
2500 to 3000 feet of sidewalk each year.
Upgrading the Village Sewer System
The Village Sewer System at the present time is at its maximum capacity and the DEC has put restriction that they must approve any additional hookups to the sewer system. The Village has started the process of reviewing their options and locations for a Sewer Upgrade and has applied for a grant to update the system.
